59-year old Michael Flynt has returned to Sul Ross University in Alpine, Texas to finish something he started 37 years ago....play football.
'Grandpa' is competing against 100 other college football player wannabes to make the team.
The official roster for the team will be decided possibly this week.
In 1970,Flynt played linebacker for the Sul Ross team but got kicked off the team...nobody is saying why.![]()
Doesn't matter...the NCAA has declared that Flynt has one more year of eligibility at the school he played at in 1970.
The 5'10" 205 former conditioning coach at Nebraska, Oregon and Texas A&M knows best whether or not he can compete with other players his kids' age.
He is almost the same size as he was when he orginally played.
Flynt enrolled in graduate school at Sul Ross because he already has a bachelors and will pay his own tuition. Sul Ross is Division III and there are no scholarships.
The old fellow (I'll not say that to his face) lifts weights, runs sprints and climbs the bleachers with the best of them.
In a few days before the September 1st deadline, Sul Ross' coach, Steve Wright, will let all of us half-centenarians know whether there is at least one among us who still has what it takes to play with the big boys.
I have been looking for a reason and a motivation to get/stay in shape. Maybe, just maybe, I have found it.
What do you want to be doing when you are 59-years old?
