Intro to How I Learned to Communicate Across Cultures

After we docked in Chinhae I called on my faithful pistons to taxi me through the local streets. Chinhae is a southern port city in South Korea, on the south west side of the Korean peninsula near to the southern most part of the country. Port cities have common characteristics. They are usually industrial cities or import/export centers. The fishing centers are usually smaller towns on the outskirts up or down the coast. Naval ports are also quite accommodating to lonely and horny sailors who have been out to sea for months at a time, are in need of entertainment and have money saved up because there is no where to use it in the Western Pacific seas during naval games. The sailors in the lowest enlisted ranks often, for security reasons, did not know the ship’s schedule. However, whenever a fleet of ships pulled into a country, the girls came crawling like ants over the hillside, from the smallest country town or village to the port city to give an appropriate welcome to the visitors. Chinhae was particularly welcoming.
