“Billy! What were you thinking?” went into one ear.
“Uh, I ...” started to reply as I sat up one more time.
My feeble reply was interrupted by, “Billy! Why do you hate blacks?”
“Uh, I didn’t know she…”
“Don’t you know you can cause permanent damage?” was the next question a mother or a grandmother interrupted me with.
“I really like…” I wanted to look at JJ and give her a smile but didn’t dare turn my head away. Instead I looked down at my new pitch black Converse sneakers. They were probably the reason I could catch her in the first place.
“What do you have against girls?” one of the ladies chimed in.
Not having learned the lesson that I should just be spoken to and not speak, I started, “JJ and I are….”
“Are you trying to start a problem? Because if you are, you’re doing a damn good job,” a teacher said.
Everybody gasped.
