
You’d think Jesus couldn’t do better at calming a storm. I looked up at the picture of him walking on the water. All of them, the parents, teachers, the principal, the superintendent, and even the Reverend looked at me with eyes as big as the wrong I had supposedly done. Each began to ramble on in various sentences that pretty much said the same thing, things like, “Well, look at that. He’s sorry.”
“And Jackie forgave him.”
“I guess that’s that.”
“Nothing more we can do if he is sorry and Jackie forgave him.”
The silence that followed was as sweet as JJ’s smile.
The parents and teachers all exchanged dumb smiles. My dad’s face didn’t change.
Even the Reverend didn’t speak. That struck me as funny but I knew not to laugh.
Then, they let us go play.
