In an earlier post - US News America's Best Colleges 2008 - 8 Questions in Need of Answers I listed up 8 questions that were passed around to the business writers of the KnowMoreMedia network.
I'd like to take a stab at the questions one by one. Perhaps readers and visitors will share their answers.
The last question -
8 - Does the US News college ranking make a difference to international students?
Absolutely...the rankings serve as a wish list for international students everywhere.
International students will start at the top of the list and
work their way down till they find a school that will accept them. The schools at the top of the list get first pick of the best international students...who if they are not paying international tuition rates, are going for free on a scholarship. One way or another, it makes a huge difference to a school's budget.
The schools, however, almost invariably get their money back out of the student through research and other contributions that the student will make.
All things considered, this is the one area where I think the rankings make a difference to the colleges/universities' quality of students and bottom line. The higher the ranking the better the international student. The better the body of international students, the harder the home students have towork to keep up. The harder all students try, the more that stick around, the more ...the more...
After all, the rankings can make a difference...but you have to go overseas and back to find out how and where.
What do you think?
