US Navy ships that have been decommissioned are usually turned into museums or used for training.
A community group in Honolulu wants to turn the decommissioned tender Acadia, built in 1981 into a homeless shelter.
The ship can sleep 1,500.
In Honolulu, land is a high commodity. A ship...well, is a ship.
It has still not been decided where the ship will be docked...but dang it, it sure
sounds like a good idea to me.
Proposals are calling for the Acadia to start housing people in May 2009. That's a long time to wait for a place to sleep.
It's estimated that there are some 3,750 unsheltered homeless at seven areas in Oahu...up 28% from a year ago.
Why not?
"Yo! Slim. Does it feel like we are moving to you?"
"Ten-hut! Fall in!"
"And, we thought this was a homeless shelter."
