Eyewitness Account of UF's Andrew Meyer Tasering Disputes Police Brutality Claim

A University of Florida student, Andrew Meyer, had to be subdued with a taser because he didn't know when to stop talking at a John Kerry forum despite the fact there were 4-5 police officers who could have just dragged his loud mouth, by the mouth, out of the auditorium. They could have dragged him by the other end as well. It sounded like that was where the noise was coming from anyway.

Extreme...maybe.

From the dailykos:

"I was at the Kerry speech today, sitting 2 rows away from all the action. I'll let you know how it really went down.

The forum was going to be over at 2 pm, and Kerry spoke for so long that the Q and A portion had to be shortened. He only got through about 7 of the 50 people who were waiting to ask questions. While the final question was being read, some douchebag ran down the aisle, grabbed the mic from the other side of the room, interrupted the kid who was talking, and started yelling at Kerry, demanding that his questions be heard. He started ranting about how Kerry talks in circles or something, and everyone was getting annoyed. The cops are all over him in no time and try to escort him out, but he starts yelling and resisting. Kerry insists that they let him stay and even agrees to answer his question.

After the interrupted guy's question was answered, Kerry keeps his promise and lets the angry guy talk. This is the point where people started taking their cameras and phones out. All the videos floating around youtube start around here. You can see in the videos that his questioning gets kind of inappropriate, so somebody cut his mic. Instead of shutting up, he starts yelling and making an even bigger scene. He struggled all the way up the aisle, and started violently trying to free himself. They threatened to taze him and he wouldnt stop fighting, so he got tazed. They only had to arrest him because he was causing a disruption and wouldn't leave peacefully. He wasn't being silenced for asking tough questions, trust me.

It's a shame that they had to taze the guy, but he had a chance to calm down and didn't take it. He probably didn't pose a physical threat to anybody in the room, but someone can't just hijack the floor of a forum like that and expect not to get kicked out. This wasn't some poor guy who was brutalized for trying to ask some tough questions. He's just an obnoxious guy who had a fit when there wasn't time for his questions and refused to be calm even when he was given the chance to speak. He was looking for trouble, and everyone applauded when he was forced to leave.

Nothing pisses me off more than hearing stories about power tripping cops abusing their power, unnecessarily tazing or arresting people, etc. It's a huge problem and I'm glad it's being discussed. Just don't mistake this for one of those cases."

Extreme? Maybe...but in this case...maybe not.

Have you ever heard of checking your sources? any one of the ten videos of what happened that day will contradict over half of your "source"'s statements. Some of the videos run all the way from 1 minute prior to meyer taking the mike, to a few seconds after meyer actually being put in the car. your source is bogus and was likely not at the event at all.

did you see how many time they tazed him? they went over the line he was in hand cuffs with two cops and they were still tazing him. the two cops could have escorted him with out all the tazing. at one point they tazed him for not standing up it's right in the video. they could have just dragged him in but they didn't they just kept tazing him. so watch out cops can do what ever they want but if you tell them no then they will taze you and arrest you for resisting arrest. thats what this is, cops learn how to subdue some one and escort them with out using a taze gun. there is no excuse for this this was an abuse of power and those cops including the ones that let it happen should be fired. The other cops that let it happen are just as guilty as the ones who did it. enough is enough. The government also wants to take our guns so we can not defend our selfs if the time comes think about it people.

What was to stop them from just carrying him out? Absolutely nothing. The people who try to justify it are the ones who are the raving lunatics.

that kid is an idiot, and totally deserve what he got. Everyone that watched the video can clearly tell that he resisted arrest and just wanted to be on tv.

The moron totally overreacted.

Exactly how does any of the footage captured contradict the account given in this article? From what I could tell, the kid was not initially being arrested. The cops took him by the arm and started to try and walk him out. There was no effort to restrain him with handcuffs at first. He was arrested after causing the scene and after violently trying to free himself from the cops. He was disturbing the peace and doing it in the presence of a US Senator. He was warned that a taser would be used if he didn't calm down, but he continued to resist and scream. He brought it upon himself.

Excessive force? Probably. He was unarmed and was already pinned to the ground. The cops managed to get one of his arms cuffed, but they couldn't restrain his other arm. Nonetheless, the kid was a rambling idiot--not a threat.

The latest reports indicate that this kid wanted all of the attention; that's what the police report reads. I guess it was probably excessive force, but I don't feel an ounce of sympathy for Andrew Meyer.

if you look closely , he had 2 or 3 cops on him, then tazed. extreme? whoever says no should be tazed and then asked this same question again.

The thing that angers me the most is that people say that he spoke for "too long" or "his time was up"

How bout..hmm lets see.. Kerry talking for too long.

there were 50 of them and only 7 were able to ask questions. Its a f***ing Q & A where there should be plenty of questions.

Those cops went to far. He shouldnt have been dragged away like that for asking "prolonged" questions... Its a Q & A! maybe they should of called it a "Questions-we-like-to-hear and Answers"

look at this... inciting a riot???????!?!? did anyone see anyone else throw a molotiv-cocktail or people cheering for vengece?

HE HAS TO BE LOUD OR ELSE THE DEAF WORLD WOULDNT NOTICE HIM

final note : don't be afraid to speak. its one of our freedoms...[at least on paper it is]

Hope they kidney punched him why he was on the ground, too.

Hothed student meets hothead cops... when I was at UF, the cops would just stand there and watch, laughing, until we talked ourselvs out of breath or everyone got hungry and left...

Andrew was obnoxious. America's first Constitutional right is freedom of speech, however, he took it too far. Even if he had just been a rambling idiot, he could have been forgiven, but he obviously wanted attention, so he got it. Just not the way he had hoped. He was disrupting the peace and was a lunatic. If I were the cops I would have tasered him too. Hell, if I see him in the street one day I might taser him just to hear the hilarious screaming again! HAHAHA

P.S. Don't believe he wanted attention? Check out his website theandrewmeyer.com He loves stirring the pot and getting people in a tizzy. This was bound to happen. He deserved it.

I think that the officers to took it too far. He asked a long winded question. and I don't care if Kerry is a Senator. I wouldn't care if he was a President. I have a right as a man, to ask another man a question. Kerry or any other political figures is not a God, and shouldn't be revered as such. Police are citizens that are granted powers to uphold the law. I challenge all policy makers to write a clause regarding proper procedure for police and ABC law enforment agencies. This legislation should require all officers taking action against a citizen, to explain their action before executing them. Else they have unlimited power and authority. It's true that the man did use harsh language, but if in the same position, and gang of people rush you in force for asking a "controversial" question, you might find it difficult to comply. I do respect some Police, but getting harder and harder to not refer to you as the biggest legalized gang in America. You do what you please. And that's a reality. If I disagree with you as an Officer, your power supercedes mine, which I believe to be unconstitition in some instances.
