If called upon to do CPR you don't mind massaging his/her heart but don't want to connect lips?
No problem says a medical study done in Japan by Kanto branch of the Japan Association for Acute Medicine.
A study of 4,068 people who collapsed was done.
712 received both mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and cardiac massage while 439 received cardiac massage only.
Those who received both - 4% were back to normal in 30 days.
Those who received cardiac massage only - 6%.![]()
Those who received nothing - 2% went back to their normal routine.
For victims who were NOT breathing at all when paramedics arrived - of those who received both 3% return to normal within 30 days...two times that - 6% - went back to normal after receiving cardiac massage only.
If I keel over...go for my heart and leave my mouth alone.
One researcher said - "Even if the person stops breathing, the concentration of oxygen in the blood doesn't go down that much over a period of about 12 minutes. In addition, the movement of the chest when cardiac massage is performed is thought to carry oxygen to the lungs."
Will you give mouth-to-mouth if you see someone keeled over now?
