I don't know a lot about a lot...but I know who opera star Luciano Pavarotti is/was.
I liken my exposure to this tenor, the greatest of his generation and maybe the greatest ever, to a time when friends sent me to the Hermitage in then Leningrad, now St. Petersburg, Russia.
I didn't know squat about art, classical, modern or otherwise. I came out of the
Hermitage overwhelmed, changed, having discovered a field that I was previously ignorant of - ignorant as in unknowing and stupid...that was me.I didn't care anything for opera either...until a friend of mine played Pavarotti for me.
Goose bumps swelled...truly amazing. I now have a couple of CDs of this opera great and CDs of other opera stars as well. Pavarotti changed me.
Pavarotti underwent surgery last year for pancreatic cancer.
A final farewell tour was cancelled as a result.
His last performance was at the New York Metropolitan Opera on March 13, 2004.
In Feb, 2006 he showed the world from his home country, in Turin how Nessun Dorma aria is supposed to be sung.
He was 71. But, his memory lives on....
