The Stanford University president is asking - is it time to increase the number of undergraduate students at the school?
In 1970 the undergraduate population was 6,221.
In 1980 - 6,630
Last year - 6,689.
However, last year, the university received a record number of applicants - 24,000 and accepted a record low percentage - 10.3%.
In 1970, 22.4% of the 9,800 applicants were accepted.![]()
The quality of applicants, if measured by SAT scores has improved.
The number of applicants scoring a 700 in verbal has increased by a factor of 1.12.
On the math test ...a factor of 2.3.
There are more Stanford-quality students and they are better qualified....but Stanford is not accepting them.
Is it time for this top tier school to open its doors just a bit wider?
What do you think?
