Okay....I am ignorant. I admit it.
I didn't know that Beaner is an old name that is derogatory towards Hispanics.
Apparently, the owner of the Beaner Coffee Chain with its 77 franchises didn't know it either.
Because of the 'ethnic slur' the coffee shop chain will change its name to Biggby Coffee from January 31, 2008.
Business reasons, too, have led to the decision to change the name.![]()
The company plans to expand and doesn't want potential customers to be turned off by the name...especially markets with larger Hispanic populations.
I am sitting in a coffee shop in super multicultural-sensitive northern California - Sunnyvale, a suburb of San Jose (Yes, I know the way) and the name of the shop is the Bean Scene. If I am a coffee drinker at the Bean Scene would that make me a Beaner, too?
Gosh, why are people calling me names and what should I think about that?
