University biologists at the University of Colorado at Boulder tried to save the native greenback cutthroat trout from extinction.
Noble indeed...but...
The biologists actually saved the wrong fish, a closely related subspecies - the Colorado River cutthroat trout.
Bummer!
Eggs and sperm from trout populations (how'd you like a job gathering eggs and sperm from fish?) have been used for decades to raise new generations in
hatcheries so that the biologists could restock parts of Colorado with the greenbacks.
The lead author of the report is blaming the 'experts at the time' for the management decisions.
I think we need these researchers here in Silicon Valley. There is a big debate going on with some saying we need to start rationing water so we can save some stupid little fish about the size of a paperclip.
Maybe UC Boulder can be sure we are saving the right, er, wrong, er, right fish?
