What Color is the Jena 6 Rally?

Thousands of protestors are marching about in the tiny town of Jena, Louisiana.

Their purpose: To show indignation over unjust and unequal punishment handed out in two racially charged incidents.

Six black teenagers known as the "Jena 6" have been accused of beating a white teenager.

Marchers chanted "Black Power" and "No justice, No peace."

The Rev. Al Sharpton led the crowd in chants of "Free the Jena Six."

More people are on their way. jena.6.jpg

I have been on the wrong end of prejudice, favortism and such having lived in a foreign country for nearly 20 years, so I don't consider myself insensitive to the indignities that black people have endured/are enduring.

I do have a solution to offer....a lesson I learned from the movie Cinderella Liberty starring James Caan.

Caan's black drinking girlfriend finds herself pregnant with an unknown father.

When the baby is born, Caan takes the girlfriend's 10-year old mulatto son to meet his mom and new younger sibling.

The little boy looks up at Caan and asks "What color is the baby?"

Caan's character responds - "He's the same color as US."

Call me idealistic. I don't mind. But, why can't we all be the same color?

What color is the Jena 6 rally? It's OUR color.

This is so sad. The black community loses all legitimacy when they are incapable of ever admitting that a member of their own race is EVER wrong. Let me get this straight... 6 guys beat the hell out of one guy and put him in the hospital (see picture: http://news.yahoo.com/photos/ss/events/u... ) and we have thousands of people marching in their support? Is this for real? Are whole communities actually condoning gang beatings? How pitiful. The responsible position for the black community to hold here would be that the Jena 6 were wrong and they should have to pay for their hate crime (which is exactly what it was). Now if the black community thinks there were crimes that were committed by whites that weren't prosecuted, they could legitimately gripe about that and direct their protests in that direction. However, the answer here isn't to make martyrs out of 6 thugs who gang beat the crap out of one young man.

As an African American woman I don't think 6 young men beating on 1 young man is right. I don't think the sentence of 22 years in jail is approriate either considering that hanging of the noose was deemed a prank, silent protest, arson , and scuffle that took place prior to that was ignored. I am not agreeing with the action that took place. The young man who was beaten pulled a shotgun , mouthed off and was jumped. he went to the hospital then attended a party later on that night. Is that the behavior of someone who was almost murdered? does the punishement fit any of the crimes? Where were the authorities who didn't think this was a big deal and allowed things to boil over. I'm ashamed that in 2006 this behavior is acceptable. It isn't a black or white thing . Its a human being thing and we should do unto others as we'd like done.

This is so typical of the "black community" and these so called "civil rights leaders" who by the way do not seem to be concerned at all for the white victim here. What about his civil rights? Every story I have read regarding this is very biased and written without the slightest bit of objectivity, I wonder if the situation were completely reversed would these same blacks be calling for attempted murder charges and accusing the DA of being to lenient and would he still be called a racist? Black and so called black leaders have been operating under a double standard for too long now it is growing very old. I read an article stating that the victim here called certain blacks "niggers" and I have a hard time trying to understand why this is upsetting. After all the word nigger is heard everywhere these days spewing from the mouths of blacks on the television, radio, in comedy clubs, in the malls and on the streets yet they feel they are the only ones that can ever use this word. Not to mention that they openly call whites whatever derogatory names they want to use and this is supposed to be okay. Furthermore these so called black leaders, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are the biggest detriment to black people the ever lived because they are enablers. They enable these people to think it is okay to have a victim mentality and it is okay to unjustly protest such questionable incidences of injustice and lets not forget that it is okay to take no responsibility for yourself and blame others for your situational circumstances. I could go on but I am getting off track. I think in general a large majority of Americans are tired of hearing such things as the Jena 6 particularly with the everyday injustice portrayed by some blacks that we all have to quietly deal with ourselves. I am convinced that there is no one more self serving, self pitying, overweight with no job, lazy with their hand out and oh yeah racist, than the North American Negro.

what is really sad in all of this is the black on black crime that no one ever seems to see. its ok for a young black male to beat and intimitate another young black male which happens EVERY day, as long as a white person wasnt involved.where are all the rallys to help the gang and drug infested neighborhoods? where are these so call role models for all the young boys with out any positive influences? well, in a strange way blacks can thank whites for any unity they share.seems like thats the only time they unite is when a crime has been comitted involving a white person. i also liked all the BLACK GROUPS. the BLACK sisters of Chester, the Black HIstory club etc. getting together to protest segregation. do you think any of my WHITE sisters could join?

I agree with Othaniel Cruickshank, the punishment that the prosecutor is seeking is definitely not equal to the crime. If this were 6 black teens beating another black teen this wouldn't have even been considered a broken law. Statistics show the Police mostly get involved when a white person appears to be disadvantaged hurt, threatened or intimidated. If you look at it from an intimidation and threat point of view what about the nooses hanging from the trees? Can this not be seen as a threat to someone's life in a southern society, which historically used hanging to end a black person's life? Therefore a noose is a symbol used by white Americans against black Americans to remind them of the past and continue to oppress (a hate crime). Articles show the support for the black students at the high school was turned away when they tried to address the actions for which they felt threatened. What did you expect to happen when a problem that segrated an already self-segrated school was down played by authorities. Racial tension grew, violence erupted and as history shows there is no justice for a black American who is constantly pressured daily to defend their very existence and pride. Americans with brown skin are expected to behave above and beyond the standards Americans with light skin are held by and yet they are still often seen as inferior beings. The black community doesn't pull the "race card" any time something like this happens the white community has a constant race card that is strictly enforced at all times. The black community is just asking let it not be forgotten that the justice system has white rules and black rules that statistics have proven. It's 2007 this type of racial inequality should not be happening anywhere.

I also would like to point out that unless the context of the word "mulatto" in the article "What Color is the Jena 6 Rally" was a quote it is inappropriate. Try using a politically correct term such as "mixed." "The term is thought to be derived from the Spanish and Portuguese word mulato (a small mule), which itself is derived from mulo (mule).[2][3][4] It was once a generic designation name for any hybrid. This is believed to be the reason it is considered offensive by some English-speakers" -Wikipedia

Let me make sure I understand all this.
1. If white kids put a noose in a tree [despicable behavior by the way] they should be prosecuted even though their action did not constitute a crime.
2. If 6 black kids beat up 1 white kid they should not be prosecuted even though their action did constitute a crime.
Am I missing anything?
BTW I love it when people cite Wikipedia as a source of information-anyone can post anything there-it's pretty poor as resources go.

Free the Jena 6 Back 2 Africa! Let's see ... nooses bad even though no one got injured or lynched. Kicking a kid nearly to death (what else do you call it when you've been so injured you pass out?), no problem. I see.
