Purdue University conducted a study where 10,000 students and faculty members agreed to receive a text message at 11:25 am and respond as quickly as possible.
It took seven minutes to send out 9,979 text messages. Replies came back within one minute and about 30 students didn't get the message.
Purdue wants to know why the 30 didn't get the message and why it took so long for some students to get and respond at all.
Of course, the April shootings at Virginia Tech which left 33 people dead is why schools want to be able to get the word out.
Text messaging is NOT instant messaging.
Email can be just as quick and reliable IF the student has their email account open.
Most students, do have their cell phones with them.
Last year, 158 billion text messages were sent in the United States, nearly double the number from the year before.![]()
Text messages get through when calls don't.
Students will also read text messages when they sometimes will not answer the phone.
Text messaging may not be instant but it is better....for now.
Do you use text messaging?
