Arizona State University is demanding that Salem High School in Virginia Beach give up using the nickname SunDevils.
The Phoenix school thinks their teams own the trademark.
The letter from ASU - "discontinue use of the 'Sun Devils' trademark in all school-affiliated settings. These uses include, but are not limited to: wearable merchandise, school Internet web pages, athletic uniforms and sports equipment."
The principal of the high school, at first thought it was a joke...then thought it
better to respond. It may still be a joke.
ASU uses two words - Sun Devils.
Salem High uses one Sundevils.
School colors and logos are different and the mascot is different.
Salem High School adoped the nickname in 1989. ASU picked it up long before - 1946.
ASU has yet to reply to Salem High's response.![]()
ASU has already succeeded in having "Culpeper County High School in Northern Virginia alter the design of its Blue Devils mascot and logo because it was too similar to ASU's Sun Devils logo."
Penn State also bullied an elementary school into changing its Cougars logo because it was too similar to Penn State's trademark Nittany Lion.
Gee...I bet I know one high school that will not be sending students to one university.
Is it right for universities to register trademarks?
Last time I check, a public school belonged to the public.
