A commenter wrote an excellent reply that I thought worthy of post.

I nominate the strong women in your own direct sphere of influence. My mom always taught me that celebrities are people with flaws just like anyone else.
Instead of growing up looking to the TV and movie screens for role models, I was
able to look at my own family and close friends of the family. I think this approach would work much better than putting someone most people know nothing about on a pedestal and expecting them to be the perfect role model. The underlining is mine.

Should I ever be graced with a little girl, I will indeed look for women nearby that I love and respect and tell her to be like them...
