The Democrats have always been friendly with the movie and music industry.
Now, it's time for the Dems to make some enemies with the biggest customers of the entertainment industry...students...and where the students hang out...at college.
Top Democratic politicians introduced a bill that says "universities must agree to provide not just deterrents but also "alternatives" to peer-to-peer piracy, such as paying monthly subscription fees to the music industry for their students, on penalty of losing all financial aid for their students."
According to the bill, if universities did not agree to test "technology-based deterrents to prevent such illegal activity," all of their students--even ones who don't own a computer--would lose federal financial aid.
Presidents of Maryland, Penn State and Stanford say, "What!?"
Why punish the whole campus for "only a small fraction of illegal file sharing?"
Hardly a small fraction.
Besides, how hard would it be to make file sharing more difficult on college campuses? Costs? Students will pay for it in fees.
Additionally, the students will just go off campus to do their file sharing.
Legislation will not stop illegal file sharing....scruples will....and they are a lot harder to come by.
Do you download and share music and movies illegally?
