Christian Science Monitor has a list of six countries that will face political turmoil as a result of climate change and the struggle against it.
1. Nepal - There is a lack of irrigation in the western hills districts because of shrinking glaciers. The government is not prepared to handle it and the Maoists are stirrying the frustrations.
2. Indonesia - The European Union wants 5.75 percent of its nations' vehicles to run on biofuel by 2010. In Indonesia there is "an unprecedented acceleration of deforestation to create plantations for palm oil – one type of biofuel – to serve Europe."
3. Nigeria - "Sea-level rise presents a threat to coastal cities worldwide, but the threat is thought to be particularly acute for cities such as Lagos, Nigeria" Where will the 17 million residents go?
4. United States - the US National Guard could be overstretched by its dual roles as both war fighters and as first responders during disasters - think hurricane Katrina
5. Arctic - a Russian submarine planted a Russian flag on the seabed beneath the North Pole. A race/war for oil?
6.East Africa: Decreased food production has set off large-scale migrations across the region.
Is there anything else we can blame on something that doesn't exist like global warming?
