6 Most Popular Diets for 2008

I figure most people don't choose New Year's Day to start a new weight lost plan because it's New Year's Day, but because they just spent the last 6 or so weeks pigging out, starting with Thanksgiving and ending with a New Year's Eve party.

No matter, anytime you realize you are overweight is a good time to do something about it. New Year's Day is as good a day as any other.

There are 6 popular diets heading into 2008.

1. The Atkins Diet -  High-protein, low-carbs. Meat, eggs, cheese and such. When the body runs out of carbs, it starts eating away at the fat stores.

2. The Zone -  overweight people aim for caloric proportions of 40 percent carbohydrate, 30 percent protein and 30 percent fat.

3. The South Beach Diet - "restricts refined carbohydrates but allows whole grains, some fruits and vegetables and other generally healthy choices."

4. Sugar Busters - attacks the 3lbs of refined sugar that the average American eats each week.

5. Grapefruit Diet - "requires you to eat half a grapefruit before every meal to reap the benefits of the fruit's so-called fat-burning enzymes." Calories are limited to 800 a day. Anybody will lose weight consuming just 800 calories a day.

6. Cabbage soup diet - "Eat as much cabbage soup as you want for seven days, and the pounds melt away." Add potatoes, fruit juices and some vegetables, lose weight, then gain it back very quickly.

The best diet is no diet, but a lifestyle where calories out are greater than calories in. Simple as that.

The bottom line is...losing weight requires a lifestyle change. I mean think about it, if your lifestyle was perfectly fine now then why are you overweight? If you self-discipline yourseld to portion control and use good old common sense, you will loose weight. Make healthy choices and you not only will loose weight you will fel better too!

Americans can learn a lot from the way people eat in Latin countries. The traditional Latin diet is simple and healthy; it is full of fresh fruits and vegetables, beans, and one-dish meals. In Latin cultures, meals are occasions for friends and family members to come together and enjoy each other's company.
