It wasn't food poisoning or some other disease that caused pain in the students' feet and hands, it was peripheral nerve inflammation due to malnutrition.
Some 194 students in a remote town in China are suffering from lack of the basic food stuffs.
Locals thought they had another SARS-like disease on their hand.
Investigators ended up at the dining hall where the affected teenagers ate, or not, suspecting that the source of the problem was there.
The kids non-fresh rice was over-washed and the water was removed when the rice was half-cooked to be given to pigs. The rest of the diet consisted of
potatoes and Chinese cabbage. That's it.
When the students were given B1 vitamins, they recovered after 3-5 days.
However, unless changes in the diet are made, the kids will have the same problems later.
We wonder how their grades suffered, don't we?
With all the money that China has, why do kids have to make do without enough food?
