3. essence - most necessary. The union and management did not discuss the essence of their disagreement - pay.
4. gratuitous - uncalled for. If it were not for his gratuitous interference, they might have reached an agreement.
5. incumbent - obligatory. There are no incumbents in this year's race for the presidency.
6. obviate - make necessary, preclude. I can't get the book online thus it obviates my trip to a book store.
7. superfluous - surplus, unnecessary. Another flower shop would be superfluous to our small town.
