
I'm a Girl Scout Cookie fan. We couldn't get them when I was in Japan over the past 20 years or so.
But, I'm back and hoping they will drop by the house.
Of course, besides just the cookies, the ideals, the character that the Girls can learn from their participation in these troops is what it's all about.
Or is it really just abou the cookies?
1933 - 23 cents for a box of 44 cookies baked by the Greater Philadelphia Council.
1935 - Commercial baker in makes shortbread cookies for he Girl Scout Federation of Greater New York. The Trefoil is born.
1937 - 125 Girl Scout councils sell cookies.
1940-49 - Calendars take place of cookies due to shortage of sugar, flour and butter because of the War.
1950-59 - Three varieties - Sandwich, shortbread and chocolate mints.
1960-69 - Peanut butter sandwich (YUM!) join the group. 50 cents a box.
1978 - Four bakers hired to make seven types of cookies. $1/box.
1990-2000 - eight varieties, low-fat and sugar-free.
Today - $3.50/box for any of the eight varieties.
1 - Cookie mom does the transporting from warehouses known as "cookie cupboards."
8 - cookie varieties - Cinna- Spins, Lemonades, Thin Mints, Caramel deLites, Shortbread, Peanut Butter Patties, Peanut Butter Sandwich, Thanks-A-Lot.
928,000 - adult volunteers.
2.7 million - girl scouts nationwide.
