Adam and Eve were found out.
They couldn't hide. The evidence of their wrongdoing was there, or in this case, not there. The fruit was gone.
The question from God was pointed.
The only recourse for Adam was to blame Eve and while at it, blame God.
"The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it." Gen 3:12
Making excuses is as old as the first sin. Passing the buck, pushing blame, escaping responsibility. The whole practice is definitel alive and well here in Silicon Valley, CA where I live and the words "I'm sorry" are as foreign as a Chinese all-you-can-eat buffet at a Hindu temple.
My dad always used to say, albeit his version was much cruder, "Excuses are like rear ends. Everyone has one and they all stink."
Adam's excuses stunk. They were just that. Attempts to escape his having sinned.
Did you ever wonder if it would have made any difference had Adam 'fessed up right away and apologized straight off?
I do.
