I read a survey once when I was in Japan that revealed that Japanese gave more value to their pets than to their neighbors or friends.
I couldn't believe it.
My son had a dog he loved so I decided to ask him. (We were living in Japan at the time.)
"If your dog and your friend were about to die in a flood, which would you try to save first?"
He pondered his answer.
I was horrified.
I did not do a good job up until that point to let him know - Humans have more value than animals. End of discussion.
Gen 1:28. God told the man and woman he made to be fruitful and mulitply (they liked that part, I suppose) and fill the earth and subdueit; and rule over the fish, the birds and every living thing that moves on the earth.
End of discussion.
People are more important.
There was the incidence in Southern CA where a woman runner was attacked, killed and partially eaten by a mountain lion. She left 3-4 kids behind. A collection was taken up that amounted to about $4000. A couple of months later some baby lion clubs were found, the mother apparently having been killed or at least missing. A collection of $20,000 was taken up.
Mountain lion cubs are NOT more important than human children, except for maybe in CA where lots of things are out of whack.
Animals are not to be abused; that is not the meaning. People come first. That IS the message.
