Teenagers Who Smoke Risk Smaller Brains

Teenagers who smoke are already starting off with a small brain, or at least are not using the brain matter they have.

The New Scientist says that nicotine may cause teenage brain matter to develop abnormally. The neural tissue that relays signals becomes impaired.

Mothers who smoke during pregnancy risk causing their children to have auditory attention deficits.

Kids not paying attention in school? Find out if mom smoked during the pregnancy.

Researchers are now trying to find out if the effects can be reversed.smoking.in.car.jpg

The director of the Ear Institute at University College London, "The findings are interesting because the key brain pathway affected by nicotine helps determine how we process auditory information when distracted by other tasks. The fact that smokers show changes in this pathway means they may be less able to hear what's being said."

Huh?
