I witnessed a great conversation this past Saturday. Insightful, thoughtful, able to leap great cultural gaps in a single bound.
I know I am at the farmer's market when everybody around me is speaking a different language, none of them English.
I am blessed and cursed to live in Silicon Valley where diversity is the buzz word and tolerance is a religion.
An Asian looking person asked the man behind the candle counter in her best English -
"What does Strawberry Vanilla smell like?"
The thoughtful and cool California dude scratched his gray-haired noggin and dug deep to find the best explanation he could.
Whincing, he replied very slowly, "It's, like, um, strawberry (long pause... ) and vanilla."
The pretty young lady smiled, "Oh! I'll have one."
And they all went home happy.
It's great to know that even the marketers are able to find the right words to make our guests, short- and long-term feel comfortable here in America, eh?
