I am a blogger. Duh?
I am also a writer.
As I write this, I am listening to a long time editor (46 years) of books give a talk about book publishing. His name is Alan Rinzler.
He is explaining four myths about book publishing to the Jack London writing group branch in the South Bay near San Jose (yes, I know the way.) And, I am sitting here listening.
4 myths about book publishing -
1. Publishers are NOT looking for new writers, new material. Wrong. Alan says that 95% of the material that gets published does NOT make any money. Publishers desperately want more, new, better material.
2. Writers go it alone. Wrong again! Writers, even the best need/want/use a network, a critique group. The writer holed up in a cabin or baby sitting a hotel through the winter are myths.
3. You will be rejected for your ideologies. Wrong one more time. Publishers are looking for fresh voices. And, there are a lot of things to write have opinions about.
4. Writer's have no more outlets. Last myth that is wrong. Writers have more power/access to readers now than ever before. Novels are being read on cell phones, in ebooks, and, gosh, in print, too.
Point - if you are a writer, write!
It's easy to get published. What's hard is getting read.
There's still a market for good writing.
What do you think?
