No doubt about it.
College sports is big business. The money the players, male and female alike, generate for their schools and their programs is huge. Think 10s of millions if a team can make it one of the more prestigious bowl games.
Think millions for getting into most any of the bowl games.
March Madness = big bucks for top level teams.
High rankings = better recruitment possibilities, more visibility, and more students.
The NCAA, out of principle, doesn't want athletes to be paid, wants to distinguish collegiate athletes from their professional counterparts, wants the athletes to be happy with their tuition and fees, room and board.
Why should college athletes get paid to play?
1. Multimillion-dollar salaries of college coaches. Why not the athletes too?
2. An 11-year $6 billion TV contract with NCAA. Wanna share?
3. Athletes sharing in some of the revenue they generate for their colleges. It's a LOT.
4. If a student athlete is worthy of their tuition and fees, room and board, why stop there?
So, why not pay the student athletes?
Maybe if they were students too, I'd really believe what I just wrote.
