Despite what one might think to the contrary given such crimes as the recent shooting at NIU, crime is down on college campuses.
The number of personnel enforcing the law is up.
The top ten universities in terms of number of full-time police officers -
1. Howard University - 166 officers
2. Temple - 119
3. UPenn - 100
4. University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ - 97
5. George Washington U - 95
6. University of FL - 86
7. Georgia State - 79
8. Yale - 78
9. University of Maryland - 76
9. Vanderbilt - 76
Some 69% of the police officers are white, 21% are black and 6.5% are Hispanic.
Just 30% of the protectors have college degrees and their salaries are 6% lower than local police officers.
So, why do things like the NIU shooting still happen?
Is increasing the number of sworn officers the only way to reduce crime on campus, or just one way?
