A couple, both faculty members at New Mexico State University, she black and a native of England and he, Hispanic, from Greece are claiming the school has harassed them sexually and racially as well as denied them tenure.
"Well, you're too educated to be considered black." You don't "talk like a black person." Were some of the things that she said college officials told her.
Neither had their contract renewed because they were 'not a good fit' for the college.
The husband said a college official had sent him pornographic images and that the official would make him, the husband, disappear from NMSU.![]()
This is one of our 3000 universities in the States. Who knows, until the investigation is complete, and even then for that matter, what was said and to whom and under what pretenses?
I had a colleague who was unable to meet certain requirements in an online training course. When pushed came to shove, she, also a person of color, decided that she wasn't given a fair chance because of her sex and her color. She told me, "I'll just play the race/sex card."
I wondered, but what about not being able to complete the training?
It's their fault for not teaching me properly, giving me all the attention I deserve.
My colleague holds a PhD. The truth of the matter was, she just couldn't do the job.
So, how can we know when there really is harassment?
When you find the answer to that question, please let me know.
update - the department head has stepped down during the investigation. Turns out more than one person saw the porn that came from his administrative email account. source
