An Appalachian State University student, trying to get out of paying damages to his apartment door, contrived a story that involved a masked gunman in a Pink Floyd T-shirt running around.
The college responded by shutting down the campus.
The English major, enjoying the fame, made a series of television interviews building on his story as he went.
The lies were helped out when other students said they saw a man, 6', in a white t-shirt, but without a mask or gun.
The mask turned dark, the shoes took on color - red and green. Red and green!?
Helicopters hovered, other students got phone calls from panicky parents.
In the end, the 22-year old hadn lied. Made it up. Told a big fib. Gave everyong a long one.
He now faces misdemeanor charges as well as university sanctions - community service to probation to suspension. All for 15 minutes of fame.
Have you ever told a lie that got out of hand?
