"Modern man" spends far too much time getting from point A to point B, and does it too often. As an extremely modern man, I’ve easily spent over sixty hours traveling the last month, and that’s sixty hours I really don’t to throw away. I try to use my travel time effectively to learn.
My car is full of CDs and I often plug my mp3 player into one of those gizmos that lets me listen to it through the car radio. Just today I listened to Martin McKeay’s Network Security Podcast, Christopher Penn’s Marketing Over Coffee podcast, and some mp3s from Vickie Sullivan on building my speaking business.
The train ride last weekend? That was Eric Cole of The SANS Institute via my mp3 player on password cracking tools. And that plane ride home, complete with missed flights, miscellaneous delays, and lost luggage, had a good solid eight hours of reading a couple books I’d been looking forward to, especially David Rice’s Geekonomics.
Sure, sometimes I’ll crank music on the car radio and sing along discordantly or watch the usually brain dead airplane movie while sucking down a couple of scotches, but usually I have at least as much fun actually learning something or at least being exposed to something new.
Next Sunday is going to be exciting! I’ve got two hour plus car rides, and at least 8 hours on airplanes and in airports – I can hardly wait! So much to listen to, so much to read, so much to learn, and actually time to myself to do it.
How about you? Is your car your mobile university? Do you learn something while taking the train the work?
Ted Demopoulos travels too much, but it’s the only way he gets any time to himself. He usually uses the time effectively learning, and occasionally even writes the odd blog post for his Blogging for Business blog while airborne. He’s the author of a few books, written almost exclusively while traveling, most recently his free ebook "Effective Internet Presence, Now required for success"
