Oakland is about 30 miles from where I live. I wish it were farther away. I wish it were someplace in the Middle East. And, I wish our soldiers were home and their job was finished there.
A 29-year old dad called home to his son to tell him he would be there soon to rig up the back yard for a birthday party. Pinata and all.
The dad - a pipefitter who taught himself English and earned U.S. citizenship stopped to pick up his check, then headed for the party.
On the way, he was shot and crashed his truck...and died.
His wife of 8 years waited up till 2am for him. Instead of her husband, policemen met her at the door with the news.
His boss called him "such a nice kid, a hard worker." Kind of like what we say about our soldiers serving overseas and preparing to go, eh?
We wonder where they might be safer. Serving overseas or hanging out at home.
We can surely rule Oakland out.
