My hat is off to the boy. Oh, and the young lady next to him, too.

IMHO, this is what higher ed should be about. Using your gifts, in this case swimming, to get into college/university. Swimming hard and representing your school well = giving the school its money's worth. And, also making every sincere effort at being the best student possible = getting his money's worth.
