I teach for an online university.
One of my colleagues started a thread on reasons why students say they couldn't do their homework or get it in on time.
Here are some of the reasons so far -
1. computers that crash
2. parents in the hospital
3. parents dying
4. unable to open up a Word document
5. had to travel out of town on business
6. had sick kids in the hospital
7. have cancer (this one is scary)
8. have been sick
9. forgot they had work due
10. storms in their area leading to power outages
11. lost job
12. had a divorce
13. got married
14. had a baby
15. bought a new house
16. moved
17. started a new job
18. have a child with a disability that requires extra care
19. financial woes - can't pay internet, can't afford software, can't afford computer
20. going on vacation
21. deployed or called to training in the reserves
22. had to work overtime or a double shift
28. My pin drive was stuck in a flood in my car and became waterlogged.
